The eagle as a heraldic symbol is a symbol of power and respect. The best known of the designs of the Eagle of Saint John is that of the personal shield of Isabella the Catholic, and later integrated into the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. He incorporated it for his devotion to the Evangelist.
